Hong Kong Mahjong (Clean Rules), locally known as "Three Fan Start" or Cantonese Mahjong, is the most widely played mahjong rule set in Hong Kong. It is characterized by its simplicity, making it easy to learn while retaining the fundamental elements of mahjong. The simplified rules make it accessible to people of all ages in Hong Kong. For those who have never played mahjong before, especially foreign visitors, it is considered the ideal entry-level mahjong format.
Originating from traditional Chinese mahjong, Riichi Mahjong developed after mahjong spread to Japan via waterways. It incorporates unique features such as Dora (bonus tiles), Furiten (waiting restrictions), and Riichi (declaration of readiness). This version has more complex rules and stricter winning restrictions compared to other formats, leading to the development of advanced defensive techniques. Riichi Mahjong is one of the most popular competitive mahjong formats worldwide.
Mahjong Competition Rules is a competitive mahjong format established in China. It uses 136 tiles (without flower tiles) and emphasizes calculations and strategy, with a core focus on "fan types." Players must reach 8 fan to win a hand. The scoring system is rigorous, featuring a variety of high-value hands (e.g., Big Four Winds, Thirteen Orphans) and technical combinations. Guobiao Mahjong highlights fairness and competitiveness, making it a common format for international tournaments such as the World Mahjong Championship. Its slower pace and complex scoring system make it ideal for competitions and advanced players. It is one of the most popular competitive mahjong formats globally.
